‘Tis the Season…. For Waterfowl

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and I’m not talking about Christmas. It’s waterfowl season! Regular season waterfowl hunting begins in early November here in Colorado, but since we spend much of early November chasing deer and elk, tomorrow marks our waterfowl opener! There is an early goose and early duck season that act as teasers, allowing us to knock the dust off the guns and gear. However, tomorrow is what really kicks off the most grueling two and a half months of the year. It’s time to rummage through the drawers, closets, and storage units. It’s time to pull out the merino, the camo, the ammo, and the duck calls. We’ll give the guns a thorough cleaning, make sure the decoys are rigged, and from now until the end of January, we’ll set our Friday and Saturday night alarms for four, three, or two in the morning. No more sleeping in on the weekends. It will wear on us and we’ll have moments when we laugh at the absurdity of what we choose to do. But it’s the most wonderful time of the year because we know what lies ahead: Plenty of time outdoors, amongst friends, doing what we love to do. So tomorrow we’ll wake up begrudgingly, make the “Did you wake up?” phone calls, and hustle to the riverside for what will be one of many adventures yet to come.
